Message from the President
Please let me extend my personal inviitation to all of you to attend IWPA's 57th Annual Convention in my hometown of Vancouver, Canada, April 17-19, 2013!
I’ve already spoken to some members about the wonderful schedule planned, and I know many of you have already registered. However, if you have not yet decided to attend, let me tell you a little bit about this amazing event…
Vancouver – one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
My hometown pride aside, Vancouver really is a unique city - and was the home of the 2010 Winter Olympics. According to Forbes Magazine “Vancouver is noted for its natural beauty….in this coastal city open air is abundant, from the green west-end campus of the University of British Columbia to the enormous Stanley Park…both the snowcapped Coast Mountains and the Pacific Ocean provide a beautiful backdrop, and the city's diverse cultures offer a resounding finishing touch”. You will be staying at the Westin Bayshore right on Stanley Park and the ocean, with spectacular views of the mountains. You will have a chance to explore the City – there is a tour of Stanley Park and the Capilano Suspension Bridge - as well as an opportunity to play Vancouver’s most prestigious golf course, Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, home to the PGA Canadian Open in 2011. Friday afternoon is free, so you will have a chance to see the sights, and that night you will enjoy the IWPA closing banquet on a three hour sunset tour of Vancouver Harbor.
A remarkable array of speakers! IWPA Conventions always have strong speaker lineups and we pride ourselves on bringing experts in to inform our membership. This year is no exception, as we will be joined by a prestigious and renowned group of presenters on everything from international trade to market trends, Lacey to the EUTR, carbon credits to sustainable building trends. We are delighted that the Honorable David Emerson, former Canadian Federal Minister of International Trade and also Federal Minister of Foreign Affairs, has agreed to be our keynote speaker on Friday morning. In addition to Mr. Emerson, we will also be welcoming Architect Stephen Chung, star of PBS’s “Cool Spaces” program, the Chief Economist of HSBC Bank, and other leading experts in a variety of fields. We will also provide updates on legality in supply chains globally, including the new EU Timber Regulations, SKVA in Indonesia and other developments.
Networking. It goes without saying that IWPA members view the Convention as a chance to do business. Following our schedule from last year, we will provide half hour “network breaks” to allow you to conduct business while still being able to attend the programs. Representatives from over 20 countries are registered, so don’t miss this opportunity to interact with many colleagues from abroad, all in one place!
So please take the time to join us in Vancouver April 17th-19th. I would encourage you to register quickly – the convention is less than a month away and the reserved Hotel block closes Friday, March 22nd! You can register for the Convention online, or contact IWPA staff at 703-820-6696.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact me directly at 905.814.8000 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
