IWPA's World of Wood Convention Generates Rave Reviews

Representative Mary Bono Mack (CA-45) meets with incoming IWPA President Scott Beggs, PAC Chair Cindy Bergin and Christian Mengel, IWPA President.Alexandria, VA – The International Wood Products Association (IWPA) March 25-27, 2009 convention in Indian Wells, California was declared the “best ever” by the nearly 200 industry leaders in attendance. There was a clear purpose during this year’s event to provide IWPA members and guests with tools to help their companies survive the turbulent conditions that are expected throughout 2009. Seventeen speakers provided timely and focused guidance on Lacey Act compliance, CARB enforcement and the 10+2 Customs regulation. Participants also heard from speakers on how to maintain credit access, obtain credit insurance and design insurance for Lacey Act losses.

Brent McClendon, IWPA Executive Vice President said, “We received tremendously positive feedback from this program. Our members wanted an immediate Return-on-Investment and I’m thrilled how our speakers came through for them. From economics and market projections to helpful insights from a Member of Congress, our people left with solid planning insight that they can immediately put to use.” McClendon continued, “Our total attendance was down a bit as expected, but the enthusiasm and business connections certainly weren’t. One example is the new overseas contacts that many of our members made which greatly assists them in their sourcing for 2009 and beyond.”

IWPA’s newly elected President Scott Beggs, President and CEO of American Pacific Inc. located in Holly Springs, Mississippi commented, “These conventions are so rejuvenating for the mind and our businesses. We leave facing tough times, but also confident in the knowledge that working together through IWPA we can overcome any obstacle in our path.” Beggs continued, “A top agenda item for our business meeting was expanding distribution of IWPA’s Imported Wood publication which showcases the unique and diverse applications of wood. This publication connects consumers with the beauty of wood and also the many social and environmental benefits produced when they specify and use wood products.”

Mr. Beggs joins outgoing president Christian Mengel, DLH Nordisk Inc.; Chris Paras, The Penrod Company; Alan McIlvain, Alan McIlvain Company; Chris Connelly, North Pacific Inc.; and Warren Spitz, UCS Global on IWPA’s Executive Committee.
