IWPA Statement on Formaldehyde Emissions in Composite Wood Products

ALEXANDRIA, VA – The International Wood Products Association (IWPA) released today its statement regarding formaldehyde emissions in composite wood products. “The U.S. leads the world in establishing safe formaldehyde air emission standards for composite wood products.” Said Cindy L. Squires, Esq. Executive Director of the IWPA. “U.S. importers and the American industries that rely on these products have established procedures to ensure they are purchasing and distributing products that meet consumer demands and regulatory requirements and continually seek to improve those procedures.”

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) Airborne Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) standards requires all manufacturers of hardwood plywood, particle board, MDF and thin MDF to be third-party certified under a program that includes site audits and regularly scheduled emissions testing. Companies converting these panels into finished products must demonstrate use of compliant panels. Purchasers of finished goods must use reasonable prudent precautions when sourcing products that contain regulated panels.

“The stringent California emission limits will be applied nationally when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalizes its regulations implementing the Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act. IWPA remains committed to partnering with CARB and EPA to ensure that producers from around the world are able to meet the existing requirements as well as the new regulations being developed by EPA. Consistency between the CARB ATCM and EPA regulations will be critical to achieve swift national application of these strict emission standards.”

Established in 1956, the International Wood Products Association (www.IWPAwood.org) is the leading international trade association for the North American imported wood products industry, representing 220 companies and trade associations engaged in the import of hardwoods and softwoods from sustainably managed forests.  Association members consist of three key groups involved in the import process: U.S. importers and consuming industries, offshore manufacturers and the service providers that facilitate trade.
