Elections Have Consequences

It is hard to believe but fall is upon us. In addition to the leaves changing color and the return of football, Fall 2016 brings with it the close of one of the more colorful election seasons in recent memory. At the presidential level, the choice facing voters includes the two least popular major party candidates in history according to a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll. It is yet to be seen whether this will depress voter turnout or alternatively drive it higher as many Americans vote against a candidate rather than for one. As I sit down to write this column the IWPA offices are returning to normal after the whirlwind of planning and executing our 60th World of Wood Annual Convention. For the second year in a row a record number of attendees registered to participate in a full agenda of speakers and panel discussions, networking events, and who can forget the armadillo racing that proved even more hilarious than I imagined. I couldn’t decide whether the armadillos were cute or hideous, but as the attendees scrambled to herd them across the finish line I couldn’t help but think about the economic and regulatory twists and turns that must be negotiated as our members scramble to guide their companies to profitability.  Read More
